BOC, Week 4 Big

The Marketing strategy in Big

In the beginning of the movie McMillan toys talked about they didn’t understand why the market research they did came out wrong. They didn’t understand why a kid that likes toys didn’t like the toy they were trying to produce. In the movie they show Josh going into a FAO Schwartz and he sees Mr. McMillan. Mr. McMillan says to josh what are you doing here? Josh says he comes there to look at the toys. Mr. McMillan says this is good marketing research because you can see the toys. All it took was an electric key board on the floor to bond these two souls.

Josh became vice president of product development in a week all because he was at a toy store at the right time. Susan and Paul are having breakfast and they casually mention josh, and Paul asked where he used to work? Susan said she has checked all major toy companies and nobody have heard of him. They are watching the news and Paul notices business men of Wall Street are getting arrested and don’t know why. Susan pours milk and there is a missing picture of josh on the carton.

At one of the business meetings they talk about how the empires state building robot toy, and the demographics that are involved, and that 9-11 year old like this toy. Action figures have climbed to 27%-45% in the last two years. Mr. McMillan says you can’t stop a thirteen year old boy from growing up, because all he wants is a thirteen old girl and you can’t build one of those like you can a toy. Josh gets his inspiration from other kids and himself and this is how he gets his research. This is the best way to conduct your research.

McMillan toys were showing “limited expertise” pg. - 71 in their conduct of study, it took a 13 year old to tell and show them what a kid wants. Sometimes with companies they lack common knowledge and just pay a little too much to the competition and not the consumer wants.” Responds of their needs” Pg. -73. In conclusion it’s good to clear up key issues before research begins.” Keeps you in the loop”. pg-74

BOC, Week 4 movie 9to5

Nine to Five, is a fun loving movie that made history and it was a start of a social movement.
This movie was important to the cast, fans and directors. Collin Higgins was the director of this eighties movie and along with this movie came a great cast. Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Daphne Colman were the main stars in this film. This movie was based on working secretaries with a 9 to5, job.

While watching the commentary Jane Fonda said that as she was making the movie she read an article that said a woman had killed her boss. She thought this was a perfect movie to be making, because of the reality that it showed. The movie starts off with Judy (Jane Fonda coming into the company named Consolidation. It’s her first day of work and Violet (Lily Tomlin) is her trainer. Violet and Judy enter Mr. Hart’s office so she can meet her boss.

Mr. Hart’s character consists of a sexist, egotistical jerk and he’s a major flirt with the entire woman in the office. The movie shows animation and special effects, which is one the biggest reasons why this movie was such a great success, besides the cast. The movie is a comedy that was made into a reality. The director Collin Higgins wanted to turn the reality into a fantasy for the woman. Collin knew that he needed the perfect cast to shine through in their role.

The commentary did say that Lily Tomlin said that it was hard for her to play a role that she had to pretend that she was a cartoon character. She had to look at things that were actually there she basically had to use her imagination. This is could have been a “Potential Conflict” pg-75. The director in the movie had to have a “Time horizon” pg-74 so that he reached his deadlines for the movie. I think a great way to sum this movie up is a “General face- to face- setup” pg-80. The director basically collected data and research before the actors were casted for the roles.

BOC, week 2 Booty Pop

Booty pop and the significance it holds- Booty pop is a padded bra that was made into undies for women. The idea that it came from was the concept for women to have the booty they have always wanted without spending the surgery price. Founders Lisa Reiser and Susan Bloomstone wanted to create a product that would be made for women and to feel great in their jeans just like the stars. Booty pop was first introduced on infomercials and later was carried at retailers such as Bed bath and beyond, target and wal- greens. It did so well worldwide that the men wanted to wear them too.

I really enjoyed their website it had great information regarding the history of fashion and celebrity photos. I think that booty pop is genius besides who wouldn’t want a bigger booty?

Who spends more money online men or women? When it comes to fashion and trends women shop online more than men. Men do spend a lot of time online when it comes to electronics and they usually compulsive shop especially when it comes to a new phone that comes out. I have talked to a few of my guys friends and they all told me that they always buy the newest smart phone that hits around the holidays. They want to have the newest thing out and it’s all about the technology. About 85% of brand purchases are made by women. (www.sheconomy.com)

What advantages do marketers have for women shopping online? I think they have a big advantage because women are always online looking at something especially all the fashion websites. Facebook is known for putting ads up and that they make sure women that like to shop see these ads. This is smart because this is a great advantage to get to their pocket book.

BOC, week 2 Survey

The survey that I read was called “Lunch trends in the U.S food market”. The research that was conducted was consumers and where they wanted to eat at for lunch. The research conducted the following: 37% of consumer’s cite a menu item that they usually get and 36% cite a menu item that they don’t usually have including at home. About 35% of the consumer’s want a meal under $5.00 and 31% choose a restaurant that has menu items under $10.00. I thought this was very interesting and helpful information.

This survey is known as Applied research pg-37 “Marketing research kit for dummies”. Applied research is basic information that is related from a real life problem and confronted by a real life manager or business owner”. pg. (38) In this survey it shows that consumers are more likely to choose a familiar item that they’re used to eating on a daily basis. This survey was based on grocery stores and food retailers. Based on this information I think the data that was given will be a good resource tool for me and my marketing project.

This survey demonstrates the qualities of a Focus group pg-41. Focus groups are very important especially when it comes to research with companies that are either starting out or have been in business for a while. Interaction between humans is a big part of how you do research on a product. Surveys are a big part of the fashion industry and the high demands that consumer’s want. Collecting enough research is essential to having accurate results for the product.
In conclusion, some consumer’s don’t like change that’s why when companies change their product most consumers can’t adapt to the change. This is what you call brand loyalty this is very common in the industry of today.

BOC, week 1 overall of class

I’m expecting to learn the principles of gathering marketing research, and knowing how to apply it in my everyday life. I want to know how to apply marketing research to my career. I have always learned so much in your classes especially business law. I have also liked how you would lecture and show visuals on the projector such as movies and TV shows like mad men. I would love to be able to take research in your class and apply it to my other classes. I think that fashion is a big part of marketing so I look forward to learning the fundamentals that I can take from your class and to bring to my international marketing class.
I think that anything that has to so with research is interesting. I hope that I can do surveys as part of my research in this class. Surveys are a huge part of research especially in the fashion field. Focus groups are also used this is also a great way to do research. When doing marketing you need to always remember the four P’s Promotion, Product, Price and Place. I’m interested to read this book and I hope to get some great concepts form the chapters.
In your recent classes I have learned about the law of business and how it works. Mr. Foor and you have taught me more about business than any other teachers in this school and I thank you for that. I hope to take all your teachings with me into my career, and think back occasionally who taught me all that I have learned while attending this school. This is all I can truly ask or expect from any of your classes. In conclusion, it’s all about the knowledge, and wisdom that I have been taught.
